Please don’t worry if you get any of the questions wrong as the Q&A is intended to share best practices and learn from each other.

My answer was not to administer CPR as the body was cold and I get the “heebie jeebies” for breathing into a corpse. Plus I think I would panic and forget everything in an emergency!

However, Lisa explained it is outside the scope of someone not from a regulated body (nurse, doctor, etc.) to determine death based on a physical assessment that life has ceased. Thus, first aid should be administered. So, stay calm and remember the steps of CHECK, CALL, CARE:

1) CHECK the scene and ensure it is safe
2) CHECK the client. Check Airway, Breathing, Circulation.
3) CALL 9-1-1
4) CARE for the client and follow instructions to begin CPR.

It is best practice to call 9-1-1 first as once you begin CPR, you cannot stop until you are relieved.

If you feel it will be too traumatic to do airway breathing, studies have shown the compression only first aid is just as effective. It would be acceptable to do compression only first aid.

Compression-only CPR is giving continuous chest compressions of approximately 100 compressions per minute, without giving rescue breaths.

If you are the only responder on the scene, you will not have the time to call another staff member for help (PSW / CM / ED).

Please continue to post any answers, comments, and questions.

2.check the person’s A.B.C and if not breathing call 911 while phone is on floor with speaker on and apply CPR immediately. Follow instructions that are given by the dispatcher. Wait until 911 arrived on scene.
3. Also to keep in mind depending on the person’s body alignment may need to place the person into H.A.IN.E.S after checking A.B.C

2) Shake client for a response, apply your A.B.C
3) Call 911 and keep client warm by covering with blanket.

Follow instructions from the operator and stay with client until help arrives.

I would cover the client with a blanket, then I call 911.
Since the client is unresponsive, after I checked A (airway) and B (Breathing), I would start C (compression) immediately. I will continue CPR until the ambulance comes or I get help from someone else.
